Pennsyltucky II

Pennsyltucky II
Pennsyltucky II

nthony Flis’ recap:
Pennsyltucky is an awesome event put on by some of the raddest guys on the east coast! Dean and Ray have been skating longer than most of us racing have been born and they were part of the underground vert scene in the 80s. They know how to host a bunch of skaters to say the least!

A place to crash, food if you need it, good stories and always making fun of those who are so easy to rag on. I didn’t get in to Harrisburg until late Saturday night towards the end of the Slide Jam Style Fest so I couldn’t compete but it was so much fun ripping up the hill into the early morning with guys like Keith Rebhorn, Pat Schep (Earthwing), Brian Peck (Rayne), and Jeremy Ross (Clutch). Everyone was ripping and had a great time. In the end Jeremy Ross took home the first for the slide contest throwing big high-speed standers like no one else. We stayed up and time traveled the hour back in time for daylights savings, drinking wine and sharing stories. Listening to Rob Mckendry and Rayzor Ray shooting their glory day stories back and forth was a huge high light of this trip. Adam Dabonka was also awesome as always.

Sunday I woke up to coffee brewing and Dean throwing a bunch of boxes of pop tarts out for us broke, dirty skaters to eat. His roommate (who is in his 70s by the way) went out and got us four dozen donuts too, which was awesome. It had rained through the night so a clean up crew was sent to the hill to scope out if it was ridable and sweep leaves and water. After an impromptu street skate session with Brian, Max Dubler and Jeremy we piled into cars and made our way to the race hill. Everyone was a little uneasy at first because of the dampness in the hard 90 degree left but it wasn’t a problem. I got a by along with Fifi (Michael Freifeld) because of our first and second finish in the spring and got to watch some funny crashes at the finish line with people wobbling out over the pavement change and cat tracks going 55mph at the bottom of the hill. I made my way into the semifinals with Brian Peck, Sean Graves and Fifi. It was a gnarly run with Sean surprisingly out in front seemingly impassable. Brian was right on me and Fifi behind him and as we went over the pavement change I was a foot behind Sean with Brian moving around me when I got the most intense wobbles ever after hitting every cat track on the road. I had to stand up to save myself from what I thought was going to be a painful crash but I somehow stayed on my board. Brian passed me right at the line to move on to the finals and put me in the consolation round. Brian ended up winning with Sean in second followed by Rob Mckendry and Pat Schep. I ended up out in front and out to dry as draft bait for Fifi in the consi to get 6th which was an exact repeat of our final battle at the first Pennsyltucky. All in all it was one of the raddest events on the east coast and had prizes down to 18th place! To read Dean’s recap and find more media from the event check out www.beastcoastlongboarding.com

Nick Grasso’s recap:
EPIC WEEKEND OF RACING. I arrived after a 9 hour amtrak ride from hell to meet Dean Keller. I was one of the first ones there, so I just went back to his house and skated a bit, saw the four rad decks that comet threw in for prizes. More and more people started to trickle in, and by 10ish we all headed out to RADIATION RAY’s shop, and from there to the best part of the event, the style/steez/slide comp. Everyone was throwing down, including comet rider keith rebhorn who placed third! It wasn’t about the competition though, it was just rad to push yourself and shred with everyone! We got back after the slide jam in the wee hours of the morning, and after a bit I hit the hay at 2ish. Early in the morning i drove out to the race hill with Dean and Rob McKendry to check it out. We found the top half covered in leaves and water, but after a lot of cleaning, the hill was race ready. I took all my practice heats with K-REBZ, got used to the hill, and racing started. I advanced from my first two heats, which put me into the semis (or quarters, or whatever). I was in that heat with Sean graves and Rob Dahm. Kicking into the first turn, Rob and I rubbed wheels going in, and after being shaken up a little, I tucked into robs draft. At the finish I stretched and was 5 ft behind him, but it was a great way to end the racing. Thanks to Dean Keller for putting on such a rad event, and I had a blast bombing hills and going sideways!

Keith’s recap:

My Pennsyltucky was awesome. We got there saturday night and hit up Rayzor Ray’s skate/tattoo shop, and then hit up the style session. It rocked. Throwing down cool tricks and watching others throw down was awesome. I always love seeing other people shred. We made it back to our hosts house, and then sat around listening to Rob McKendry tell stories, and managed to get a late night run to wendys in. The next morning we woke up, and a "field" crew was out to the hill cleaning up the leaves. A little bit later we made our way to the hill and the practice heats began. They were fun. Then we got to racing. My first heat as fun, I got 1st or 2nd so i moved on. Then in my next heat, With Pat Schep, and Michael "fifi" Friefield, I passed Fifi through the turn, only to get passed immediately after that by Pat. After drafting both of us for most the way down the hill Fifi passed me right before the finish line. I got out of my heat, but made it to the consi for 9th place. In that heat I kicked out in front and stayed there unitl the finish line (Barely). All in all it was a fun time.
