May 2nd, 2008

This was cool to come across because the writer actually relates what we are doing in the context of the transforming of our nations economy with other companies and visionaries. I hope that this article results in more skateboards on campuses worldwide - after all it zero carbon transport… Read the rest of this entry »

Compost

April 25th, 2008

It’s true. There is a lot of scrap from making skateboards. Luckily we have neighbors like Morgan that we can depend on to help us to do the right thing. All of the the components going into Comet boards are bio degradable. This allows us to avoid the dump. I reckon while I am telling you about this - I might as well let you know that we will buy your used Comet boards back for $5.00 and compost them as well. You can use that $5.00 towards the purchase of another deck… sort of like a deposit on a bottle or can. The concept that we are hitting here is called Cradle to Cradle or Closed Loop manufacturing. For us it goes like this…..

Comet Drops

April 11th, 2008

seedbench.jpgSo after about 7 years of people asking for them, they are good to go. We shaped up the Mountain 45 and the Chalice 40 with Drops and Wheel Cuts. Here you can see the prototype templates on the work bench / SEED breeding station (Read More Later). We have production drop boards now in the mix and www.thelongboardstore.com is getting the first batch next week. In the process of creating these new hill bombing devices we did some testing in the classic Ithaca cut. Making it Local

April 8th, 2008

picture-2.pngEveryday I come across another reason that makes me stoked that we are making our own skateboards for the Comet Brand. On top of that we are making skateboards for some companies that I have a lot of respect for. Since opening our Ithaca, NY facility we have started manufacturing for three new companies, all within a few hundred miles of our factory. Each of these companies have made the decision to pay more money per unit for a quality skateboard built by us. Each of these companies have purchased skateboards from all over the world for less money. What is driving this decision? What Comet and these other skateboard brands are realizing are the real costs of sourcing from outside of ones region or continent. These costs are not just pertaining to cash flow or profits but also the toll on our ecosystem and society. Read the rest of this entry »

Doodle: Earth Snack

April 3rd, 2008

picture-1.pngIt’s been said that if you can imagine something, then it can become a reality. Usually, this is all well and good. In the case of my doodles, however, maybe it’s best they stay two dimensional. We probably don’t want sentient vegetables, nefarious crab beings and clusters of pointy geometry running around. Hopefully they’re enjoyable and most convivial in drawing form. If you want to see something specific and gnarly, maybe a fleet of winged gila monsters for example, leave a comet comment and I might take a stab at rendering your mind’s eyesore.

Krom bless,
Arlo C-B

Concrete Wave - The New Cooldown

April 2nd, 2008

phoresiajeff.jpgArticles like The New Cooldown (January, 2008, Concrete Wave) are critical to the sustainability movement. They are showing what is possible, giving us all hope, and reminding everyone that we are voting everyday with our dollar. It is undeniable that there has been a dramatic increase in awareness about social justice and environmental sustainability. America has been slow to wake up, but we’re definitely waking up. Green solutions are no longer pipedreams about future technologies. It’s here. It’s the wave of the present, and we all need to commit to riding that wave until our society reaches a balance with our environment. Read the rest of this entry »
