STEEZFEST

Here in the Berkeley hills we are lucky enough to have some of the coolest and most awkward hills in the world. Berkeley Slopestyle is an event put together by Georges Siddiqi. This event started as an idea after a very successful Steezefest Event put on by Wyndam Lewis and Blake Smith.

George had the brilliant idea of instead of sticking to one hill, we would move around to different spots in Berkeley, as to avoid the police and have different varieties. According to the event on Facebook 45 people would be showing up that day. George and I were thinking there would be no more than 30 people. We were very shocked Sunday to see 45+ showing up.

The first spot we went to was in the UC Berkeley campus. It was a really mellow straight-away. It was a nice place for everyone to warm up for the day. We were there for about half an hour before the campus police came and had to shut us down.

The second spot was a very steep staright-away into a ninety degree righty, located behind the Cal football stadium. In my opinion this was where most of the more experienced riders were really throwing down some amazing slides. Kyle Chin really impressed me with his huge stand up slides as did Pete Eubank with his large one hand toe side pre drifts! We left this spot after about an hour because we wanted to go to something a little mellower.

The next spot is where everyone really shined. Located in the community behind the Claremont hotel we sesioned a very relaxed right one eighty. The corner was quite unique because a there were chunks of concrete splattered on the ground from a cement truck. Hitting one of those chunks mid-drift was enough to send you flying! The police came within an hour and told us we needed to leave.

Our last spot of the day was the frontside of Hiller Drive for the Longest Standup Slide contest. Everyone was going their fastest then throwing the longest slides they could. After half an hour of people sliding it was determined that JM Duran, Dustin Hampton, and Kyle Chin were in the top three. From there each of those three did their biggest slide in front of the crowd. JM went first, then Kyle, and the Dustin. By a show of hands the crowd announced JM as the winner.

We then moved to the Tunnel Rd Fire Memorial for the voting and the award ceremony. After throwing out a helmet and some shirts. The votes were in!

2nd Place: Davis Fantasy from Comet
3rd Place: Liam Morgan from Comet
4th Place: JM Duran from Sector 9
5th Place: Dustin Hampton from Comet

STEEZFEST

This event could not have been done without the help of my "dad" George Sidiqqi, and our sponsors, Comet, Rayne, S-one, and Orangatang. It was awesome to see the whole California Comet Team out shredding. It was cool to see so many people coming out to our hills and KILLING them! Overall this was a great event and will definitely be happening again!
